The Castle Hill has been a convenient place for settlements for many centuries. In the 10th century a Slavonic stronghold came into being here. In the 11th century, following struggles over Silesian land between Poland and Czechs, a division of the territory of the Gołęszyce tribe was made. Cieszyn Silesia remained within Polish borders and thus became the border area. The Cieszyn stronghold was raised to the standing of castellany, it became the seat of a castellan, who was a high rank official in the hierarchy of state authorities of that time. And it played that role till the end of the 13th century when The Duchy of Cieszyn came into being.
